Pioneers of Tricking in Canada 🍁
XKC Era ~ Late 1990s
OX Pasture - Canada's first known Toronto based Tricking Team
I didn't get a chance to meet them, and I learned about them way later after consulting with Toronto historians,
but I think they had a website.. and were sharing their content for free to other members of this developing sport.
They would go on to inspire people who inspired me.
Thank you for the contribution !
~ Loopkicks Era ~ Mid 2000s
Team Ryouko - Canada's most Popular Toronto based Tricking Team
Developers of XSD & Summer Seminar ( 1st Canadian Battle Event )
Team Ryouko was the sensation that hit the internet, along with EMC Monkeys, and other mixed movement, Tricking & Freerunning content creators.
I got to do a partner stretch and hang with Chris Mark at Sunny Tangs for a bit, before moving on to Steeles West to begin being a full fledged Tricker.
I wasn't passionate about Martial Arts, but I did learn a lot while at XSD ( did a couple months of Wushu too ! ) and it was a starting point for me to network and eventually take flight.
Thank you for the inspiration !
Joe Eigo - Toronto based Viral Sponsored Athlete
I remember learning about social dynamic and how stigmatizing a reputation can be,
but as I grew older, and left the social circles, I could see how the energy and political intentions people have fades away
What people say, and how people bond together, could be founded on a lack of fairness, and is not sportsman-like to participate in.
I see Joe Eigo as a natural talent, and his tricks were ultra floaty. He was probably the most viral of any Canadian, even to this day.
Giulio Calisse helped share Joe's glory and when I was a teenager getting into Tricking, it was inspirational.
Thank you for the lesson !
Xen Dynasty - Toronto Based Tricking Team
Creators of the Toronto Gathering
I found out about Shido Xen and the team behind the Toronto Gathering
They were less visible, and weren't apart of the wave of videos on youtube, but were foundational to the Toronto Tricking Community
I met Nibz and JP n had a few sessions with those guys
With experienced eyes, I would say that they are "Stylish"
They inspired me to find History to be a more fascinating subject .. in school I was bored during history class !!
Thank you for the honour !
~ Invincible Era ~ Early 2010s
Team Impulse - Toronto & GTA Based Tricking Team
Successor Community
Canadian Champions
3rd & 4th Hosts of the Toronto Gathering
Canadian Community, Gathering & Battle Event Organizers
We all met around 2007 at Steeles West under Allen Keng, forming our friendship group which was also our team and we had friendly competition and a drive to better ourselves, while making goofy videos but also branching off to different gyms and finding our own places to train either together or at our own pace
Typical teenager / young adult stuff, I think
Later on, we would become essentially the strongest force in Toronto, and later all of Canada
Yusuf hosted the Toronto Gathering in 2010 called Panda, and it brought immense glory to Toronto, likely his crowning achievement, one part in a string of National events that put us in a good light, I think
I didn't stop venturing out and collecting information from outside of Canada, and bringing the bread back home.
As Canada's first Traveler, I learned what I could back in the early days of the internet and in person at events like the World Championships, and helped with sharing inspirational and meaningful trends from the outer sport at large, with a strong focus on progress and continued development for myself & the crew
Business would become a more prominent aspect of our directions as well, and it is the primary reason that the team has separated, seeing things differently and forming different political views and having different national allegiances
Regardless, we are all still Canadians, and we are all competing to rise to the top of our country
Thank you for the competition !
World of Tricking Era ~ Late 2010s
Daniel Teixeira - Honourary Canadian National Champion
5th Host of the Toronto Gathering
Battle Event Organizer
I remember Dan came up to me, likely because I could be found training at the MV
I remember he was enthusiastic, and clearly driven to compete
In a similar way I was inspired by the generation that came before me, its possible that Dan had a similar view for the Trickers in my generation
I don't think I taught Daniel too much, but I did try to motivate and encourage him to better himself and seeing him succeed made me happy and proud as well
He taught me that the younger generation always comes in and they progress way quicker than the last. Seeing him was like what it must have been like for the older generation seeing us emerge and take over
Daniel was a successful improvement skill level wise compared to us
I think he might have the most on-the-floor accomplishments of any Canadians I ever saw
He's also got the best battle resume for a Canadian in his age group, competing at the highest level, and having placed the highest consistently in his day
It's cool competing with the younger generation sometimes too. I learned to take motivation from everyone
Thank you for the pride !
2020s ~ Adrenaline Era
BAM ( Brock Acro Movement )
Developers of the first official Tricking Club in Ontario
Was a successful next-generation community project of Canadian Trickers who used their university education to structure and produce a happening club, which was inclusive to parkour, freerunning & tumbling
The lead of the initiative was an attendee in the Toronto Tricking Community, named Jordon Wilchynski-Yu ( in green ) who participated in our start up events and went on to improve upon the model of a legitimate Tricking Club along with his partners and lead a community of his own
Although the skill level was around the beginner level, a kind of reset has been needed here and avoiding the pitfalls and mistakes of the previous generations is actually something to be celebrated. Being a successful improvement compared to the previous generation in terms of organization and business regulation is a step in the right direction for Tricking in Canada
Congratulations and I suspect that your community will go on to be successful in any of the endeavors they set their sights on
Thank you for the hope !
