Tricking Battles Youtube Channel

This page is a supplement to the on-going development of a historical resource named Tricking Battles that was created while on a trip to Japan in 2019 and it's evolution, eventually functioning as a platform for education & authentication

I initially created my youtube channel to show off the sport and went to various communities, filmed and uploaded those experiences, and eventually began to outsource videography to freelance filmers from anywhere in the world

I also began to categorize the footage of these events into different competition levels having to create terminology as well as my own ranking system in an effort to piece the story together, culminating in this internet based museum that is founded on logic and striving to quantify my understanding of the sport with objectivity & accuracy

Sometimes I work directly with organizations and I do introduce myself as an investigative journalist now ( as it's become necessary to make that evolutionary leap), other times I will hire even individuals from the public if they film events and want to contribute. On rare occasions people donate footage to me

The collection of footage serves the purposes of providing free education & inspiration primarily,

but also we can follow the story along and see if there are any inconsistencies or issues presented by bad actors or unintentional divergences away from the real history of the sport

I do not ask for any private information on athletes going into their personal lives - this is strictly for the purposes of obtaining footage & now issuing warnings about corruption. I work with Organizations, Trickers & Videographers to obtain footage, originally giving credit to suppliers but now withholding their identities to respect privacy laws and to protect sources since battle footage serves multiple purposes

I may ask about how an event is organized on a deeper level than whats presented in the advertising but this is information that should be provided to the public anyways

The direction I support is to assist newcomers (or anyone) to the sport towards understanding what authentic and legitimate tricking entities are and away from dangerous situations

Education is paramount, and so the goal is not to mislead but to help connect everyone to one understandable resource that most accurately traces our history

Its a free initiative and the contests that are highlighted are selected to promote communities that are establishing themselves as trusted homes for athletes that are safe and where contests are held in good faith

I own the footage in most cases, but I do also use my experience to retrieve nearly lost or buried footage from other sources and upload that as well, but I always give credit to the original sources

If organizations are found responsible for corruption, their content will no longer be purchased and highlighted and I'll write about to the public / audience to be aware of what is happening and how best to respond to the situation in compliance with current reported standards and international solutions based on the complexity of our situation

Below are my rankings, including people & countries and my view as an experienced Canadian Battler / Traveller and how I categorize the state of their Tricking advancements & contributions as well as their level of legitimacy and safety

Utopia Tricking is carrying out a multi-national initiative to understand the state the sport is in and encourages integration into society, this means encouraging forming communities to develop professionally, confirming the validity of organizations as well as ministry approval by country, encouraging advancement towards legitimacy

There is no yet international sports federation to approve World Championships, and so at this time the Hall of Fame will attribute rightful credit to native events who meet the criteria of a Nationals or World Championships while transitions are made towards establishing formal Tricking Contests so that one day real National and World Championships can be sanctioned officially

The world is in a mixed-state of Grass Roots & Professional Leagues, and so not all events are properly authenticated yet

This is the 1st ever Hall of Fame for Tricking

Positive Traditions

Regardless of global politics, Tricking began due to free contributions made by the pioneers of communities around the world

It was customary to create discussion, share ideas, make inspirational videos, provide free education in tutorials and guides, debate topics and this is a practice that I intend to continue to carry on as a Canadian who participated in the initial boom back in the mid to late 2000s

The highlight is to recognize and promote positive contributions to the sport - ofcourse there are mistakes and intentional wrong doings that have been made by every country at some point throughout history along the way, but this section is dedicated to where we can focus on the glory of countries rather than our worst moments

Inter-Tricking Global Politics has it's own dynamic and the younger generation do not share the same emotions as the political leaders of our countries per se, so personal conflicts and cycles of hatred are to be discouraged. I hope we're able to work together for the sake of the future of the sport, providing a safe environment for learners, parents, new, native & veteran athletes and professionals to co-exist and foster growth in the right direction

Tricking is highly integrated and formed over the internet, and every country has made positive contributions and works together regardless of outer and past conflicts that are non-Tricking related. This means that the political division you hear about on the news is not necessarily shared by political leaders within Tricking and the conflicts from the outside world don't impede the judgement of most Trickers. Most Trickers work together regardless of borders and seek to maintain the traditions that created our sport in the first place

International Federation in Tricking
The intentions are to promote the welfare and advancement of the sport in the interest of every Tricker, regardless of nationality, colour, race, gender, or dividing factor

At this time there is no International Sports Governing Body, and many countries do not even have formal National Governing Bodies to approve World Championships, though there are some leagues and associations, in some cases countries have multiple associations

As a Canadian that has been working domestically & internationally to promote & advance Tricking, and learning more about the political landscape of our sport, tackling global issues & working towards clean Tricking, I'd like to state that I am open to the idea of reparations should there be any conflicts that need to be resolved and in general establishing harmony with other counties who advocate for clean sport as well. At this point my only opponent is the idea of cheating in competitions as well as discrimination based on personal divisions and I'd like to believe that leaders from other countries share similar views and fight for similar values. Tricking should not have discrimination-based conflicts and should generally be neutral and implement a common sense code of conduct to support diversity amongst practitioners to receive fair treatment & evaluation at competitions. The only enemy in Tricking should be cheating & corruption, not diversity or cultural differences

Hopefully we can work together for the sake of Tricking & it's future

My Ranking System 

I came up with this system when I took a look at the big picture and put athletes in relation to one another, not just evaluating a single battle but by looking at an athlete's career

It was important for me to look at other qualities, such as athletes having a preference towards certain organizations and if there is a variety of competition types and being evaluated by rare or prestigious judges, or if they have strong ties to judges which could discredit the outcome of a competition. Having a diverse array of experiences particularly in the 1v1 category is what I look for in an adventurer who sets off to battle & being the world's best

Some competitions are still developing, while others are huge productions. There are a lot of factors and based on my personal experience, I can gauge pretty decently what an athlete would be ranked as and if there is any funny business taking place. I evaluate organizations themselves too based on cleanliness and if they break the rules is a major consideration

Judging Criteria:
- Execution - (40%) - Style, Cleanliness & Mistakes affect my perception of execution
- Power - (15%) - Defined by how easy, floaty & flowy difficult tricks are made to look & hitting high numbers of twists & flips
- Diversity - (15%) - Exploring the wide range and infinite possibility of what Tricking has to offer: Kicks, Flips, Twists, Ground Moves, Transitions, etc
- Complexity - (20%) - Playing against momentum, tricky variations & finding ways to put things together that normally don't. Difficulty & Intricacy is valuable
- Originality - (10%) - Defined by the current metagame and constantly staying 1 step ahead. Are you a clone with a style from 2010 still? Or are you developing new and unique code with your inventions and breaking limits in the sport? 

I view judging as a sliding scale. I determine which athlete is higher in each particular category, and roughly estimate how much so. I try to use math in order to determine the specific amount, but it's based on feeling. I have to admit that I'm not capable of doing every single trick, so it would be impossible for me to accurately evaluate an athlete compared to champions that are higher level than me. Still, I can make educated guesses, and my intentions are always to declare the rightful winner. I weigh each category slightly differently, and it's setup in such a way where if an athlete falls down, the entire scale will shift in the favour of the opposing competitor ( unless they both fall .. then its a tie lol )


Champion Titles:
- 👑Grand World Champion [GC] - The single best battler, multiple World Class & World Championships winner spanning multiple years, (1) per generation
- 🎗️Title Holder - The winner / reigning Champion of a Tricking League and/or highest ranking member of an in-house Ranking System
- 🌟World Champion - [WC] - Winner of a World Class Competition or the World Championships, multiple per year due to international contests & tours
- ✨National Specialist Champion - [NSC] -  The winner of a National Special Format representing the culture of that country, (1) per year
- 🏆National Champion - [NC] - The winner of a National Level Competition & performing at/around the highest level of their country of their generation, (1) per year
- 🌠Specialist Champion - [SC] - The winner of a Local Special Format event
- 🥇Champion - [C] - A formal winner of a contest performing at the international median double ABC level
- 🏅Junior Champion [JrC] - A formal winner of an entry level contest performing up to cartwheel double full
- ⭐Informal [I_] - is applied to athletes who are evaluated and meet a certain level but haven't won a formal contest and/or have only won team / exhibition battles

Grade:
³ - Upper
² - Medium
¹ - Lower
Grades are applied to a title to relay the depth of that athlete's career in relation to others who share the same title, within the same generation

example: 
- 👑 Shosei Iwamoto [GC³] 
In one glance
it can be determined that Shosei is the highest level battler of his generation (per the title "[GC]")
and that of the grand world champions, he has the best career (based on the grade "[³]")

Judges/Captains/Symbolic Titles:
- ☀️ Symbol of Tricking - The overall best ranking Judge that formally bestows honours in public based on source culture, appropriate structure & image of the sport
- 🌙 Symbol of Tricking - Formal/Informal Judge that creates legendary resources that support, arbitrate and validate the culture & the history of Tricking's Story
- 🥋 Symbol of Tricking - Pioneers / Coaches / Athletes that add legitimacy and historical continuity to events/communities
- 🎓Senior Judge - Culturally influential & acting with high integrity. High level judges are capable of formally evaluating the top athletes and awarding rightful credit
- 📜Tricking Judge - An individual that judges Tricking contests
- 💫Team Captain - The Leader of a Regional / National Team competing in large scale team battle events
- 🎥 Videographer - An individual who uses film equipment to record an event & produces edits
- 🎙️ MC - The formal announcer / entertainer that showcases and guides nightshows as they take place while educating and encouraging the audience

There is no formal process at this time, and either communities or individuals elect themselves to become different roles in Tricking - It's understood that as communities form into business entities, that being in a role requires transparency in clearly communicated evaluation standards and developing a certification system publically is the next evolutionary step taking place for Tricking at this time. Every country has a different system of evaluation, it is recommended to abide by your country's rules and/or advocate for change if necessary & justifiable

Symbol of the Nation
A national symbol is an athlete whose storyline is attached to their country based on being involved in the advancement of their nation and represents it internationally through contributions, in battles & as a judge at the highest level. In general I believe that national symbols also encourage the positive growth and development of the sport and discourage sports corruption & uphold the true historical account of their country. These are athletes that are dedicated to their home country. It's typical that National Symbols promote the traditional values of Tricking: sampler production, community building, coaching / tutorial production, battle & judging and event organizing. It's expected that National Symbols also have the intention to be inclusive towards the public, sports bodies & other nations to cooperate to facilitate the safe exchange of athletes and to legitimately host international events. In some ways I see some athletes are so dedicated to wearing the tradition, culture and history of their country that it is similar to a modern day member of a royal family. A king, queen, prince or princess for example. I select Symbols based on 15+ years of continued observation of an athlete's dedication to their countries & the sport of Tricking. In many cases it is very obvious which athletes truly represent their country and are the focal point of the story of their country's development. In many cases, when Symbols leave the community, the Tricking scene falls apart. These are the single most important athletes of their respective nation 

Community Symbol
Typically the leader of a team or community, in some cases the face of an academy or organization. These are influencers who represent their particular brand of Tricking. Community symbols may not necessarily be cooperative with one another due to the highly competitive nature of the sport and may not necessarily be dedicated to their country either. They may not necessarily yet be formally established as running a legitimate entity since most athletes start off at the grassroots level. Community symbols build themselves & their team, they also attract customers and fan bases, and typically introduce and train learners and develop hubs for Trickers to learn & interact within and call home

Competition Levels:
Tricking Events are a mix of still unregistered grassroots communities, amateur start up competitions & beginner leagues, professional world class competitions as well as professional sports leagues. Every country has a different method of administering events on a legal & legitimate capacity, in most Common Wealth countries these are handled through Sports Governing Bodies, with an International Governing Body to approve of National events & Provincial / State owned governing bodies to handle things on a more local level. In some cases there are events that would qualify to be national level but do not have recognition from their own country, and there are some that are done illegally. In the worst cases, some events are completely corrupted and the outcome of those contest and their administrators make it difficult to place trust in them.

Here are what I consider to be different types of competitions in Tricking happening all around the world

Olympics
Approved by the Olympic Committee, an International Federation would bring leading National Leaders & their communities together to participate at the Olympics before the entire world. Tricking has not yet reached this level, but has the potential one day after each country has formally established itself.
World Championships
There are cultural and historic competitions that naturally met the qualifications to be a World Championships throughout history, but the landscape of the sport is constantly shifting, and an event which may have been the biggest and best one year could become average the next. Only an International Federation can technically appoint a World Championships legally, but in collaboration with cultural experts, it's possible to combine and Tricking can find a way to host an official World Championships after political debates and discussions. At this time there is no official World Championships, but events that stood out in certain years such as Loopkicks, GIGA, HiGH & Hooked have met those standards based on the amount of countries in attendance, the competition levels being fierce as well as having a huge turn out of fans and supporters that stands out above the other contests. 
Upper World Class
Special category of World Class competitions that are highly prestigious, sometimes events that happen once every few years, and usually contain a high level of important symbols and the administration of the events is usually done very cleanly. Not quite a world championships, but worth more than your average world class competition.
World Class
World Class Competitions are events where you'll see a few tricking brands from other countries collaborating and you'll see international attendance. These events are basically in competition with one another to some degree and every so often, one of these will become the pseudo-world championships of the year ( if you compare these events to one another ). World Class Competitions typically feature high-amateur and pro level athletes who tour the world and compete on a regular basis. These are not necessarily sanctioned by their country officially, but are a natural conclusion to international cooperative events. 
National Special Format:
Every community has a different spin and interpretation of Tricking & battles, sometimes inventing their own unique special formats. Every country also has roots from different martial arts, and so these include swing contests, pad-kick contests, or battles that have special rules. This is part of developing identity and culture and makes visiting different countries an interesting experience. 
National Level:
Some countries are developed enough to come together and host pseudo-national events. In some cases it is legitimately approved and funded by a country, in most cases Tricking is still developing towards formal national events. National Level events are typically open and anyone is able to register and compete. These events often attract athletes competing to prove that they are the best in their country. 
Regional Level:
These are typically community / club held competitions. They could be free or a start-up and the skill level is typically entry level and helps shape competitions on a local level. Sometimes multiple clubs come together to have their respective communities compete against each other. 
Corrupted:
Competitions where the administrators intentionally deceive the public, sponsors, governing bodies, parents & contestants and create a heavy bias towards a preferred outcome. These could also be places where financial crimes are planned to take place due to a lack of regulation over the sport. There are various ways that competitions can be corrupted. Once recognized, I typically discourage issues before they grow & recommend reparations but once detected, I make a public declaration that corruption is taking place & issue warnings to all parties.

Recommendation:
It is customary to create advertisement ahead of the release of a competition in order to ensure that athletes are aware and can prepare to attend and register. In some cases, battles are reserved for specific athletes who headline the events and conflicts of interest should be disclosed. Depending on the type of competition, how an event is administered is important and affects the integrity of the competition. It's important that the rules, qualifications & marketing match the administration of how events are actually organized and are made easily available to anyone who requests this information. In general the more inclusivity & most transparency will yield a higher value of legitimacy - especially if it's clean.

Countries of Tricking

Here I talk about my personal experiences and seeing how countries have developed over the last 20 years or so. In some cases I'll give a review. I use my model of countries revolving around key figures, as well as their advancements. I also note events, and even give ratings to communities ( for gyms that I've been to personally )

Rating System:
★☆☆☆☆ - Lower 
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ - Higher 
Factors include how fun, safe and busy the gym is, if it has good equipment, big floor, etc and if the community there is organized well or sketchy. More of a personal thing.  

I name this category "Countries of Tricking" in tribute to the event that took place in Japan called "World of Tricking". It does not appear to be around any longer, but I wanted to help carry on the spirit and identify different countries, their symbols, champions & history a bit

I'll write about my perception in relation to my experience. Some countries are more developed than others, and I haven't been everywhere !

Argentina

I first noticed Argentina recently, maybe in the year 2023? Argentina has formed into an association in 2014 from my report and is collaborating with other South American countries and their communities to form an interconnected network of South American battle events and athletes are attending each other's events

Australia 🇦🇺

Australia made it's debut in the early 2000s and was known for it's bright and flamboyant energy. Australia has a vibrant style of sampler making and brings very large-scale community events with fun energy to the masses. I haven't been to Australia, but Australia brought itself to the world, and I saw how it spread. The entire community down under made an impression that Tricking can be a fun, free-spirited adventure where unreal amounts of energy could be unleashed and lasting memories are made. The community can best be described as erratic and ecstatic, and the community symbols do wear that vibrancy. Australia is far away, but has had a global impact particularly in Community-focused sampler style editing and non-Tricking related shenanigans

According to the Ministry of Sports the sport has not yet reached domestic governance formally,
Though the culture dating back from the original tricking communities still have active members who contribute to continued development and event hosting and it appears as though legitimate businesses are setup to support local clubs and state level competitions at this time. Australia has not yet reached national level events but does have legitimacy and the rights behind one and a consistent growing community

Canada 🇨🇦

Canadian Tricking Community began to form in the late 1990s in the earliest of the internet and video sharing days.
Canada has a few Tricking communities with informal teams that operate out of mixed-movement establishments.
I technically found Tricking in 2005 or 2006, not sure which year, but was just watching it on youtube and dreaming about doing it. I did parkour and jumping off benches and stuff .. I think I learned bkick & maybe tornado kick. It wasn't until I found out that Team Ryouko was a Toronto based team that I took their program called XSD and eventually learned aerial, front flip, etc before going to an open gym program, learning backflip, finding Tricks Tutorials, etc, and the rest was history.
By 2009 I became the best Tricker in Toronto history, and was travelling internationally. I witnessed the development of various communities in Canada, and had competitors as well. I brought a lot of information from the outside world back home every time, and began Tricking on Trampoline, became the 4th host of the Toronto Gathering & supported the developing community. Toronto has and will always be the Tricking Capital of Canada. There is immense historical & cultural significance and Canada has helped inspire & shape Tricking through soft power and next level proto-type style achievements. I am proud to say that still to this day I am carrying on the spirit of a true Toronto Tricker & am dedicated to the advancement of Tricking in my country.
Culturally, Team Ryouko & Joe Eigo helped initiate a huge burst of awareness of Tricking on the global stage & a guest from europe named Giulio Calisse at the time of "Team Chinese Box" released huge edits of the pioneers from that era, including Canadian athletes.
Canada is still developing but has a lot of issues to work out.
Hopefully Canada will have a future with the global scene that does not go against the rules of society - that is my goal.

Chile 🇨🇱

Growing up I didn't really know too many trickers from South America, but I do remember seeing Dennyz Franco videos eventually. I have to admit I am uneducated but the story of Chile seems to be closely related to the development of Dennyz. I think we have a similar love for Japanese culture growing up, so we both share the mindset of Anime Inspired Dreams ! I saw him hit Triple ABC.. I think he might have been the first in the world ( was it him before Nick Fry? ) and so I think he's on a completely insane level. He's one of the best Trickers in all of America, and I'm hoping to see that region continue to gain more opportunities for Trickers. There is a lot of collaboration in South America. I still have a lot more studying to do .. but I have to say, Dennyz is easily one of the World's Best !

Denmark 🇩🇰

Denmark established itself as a highly creative & artist friendly community, favouring the exploration of Tricking rather than the competitive elements as much. Denmark has some Tricking roots from TKD but is comprised primarily of Grass Roots athletes. Their battle format is entertainment focused and relies on improv-comedy rather than being focused and serious. When I went there, I got to see that it wasn't competitively driven but rather more about hanging out with friends and having a great time type of community. Rasmus Ott is the clearly defining figure in the region, and Thor Astrop has been the administrator hosting the events for many years now.

France

As an un-educated, yet worldy individual, my first time I ever met French Trickers was at the original world summit - LK08'

Before then, I had recognized a clip .. it was of a man who did this cool thing I couldn't explain .. came to one day find out it was .. I believe the world's first hyper double cork? I then found his team, and it lead me to the supreme

Finland 🇫🇮

Finland has established itself a legitimate Tricking community in the form of Trikkaus and Legend Trick Gym.
Finland hosts it's own in-house competitions and has been collaborating with various other academies and supplies its own judging & battlers to international events bringing highly competitive and battle focused energy to the world stage. The first ever Finnish Tricker I ever saw was Ramin Sohrab, who I think was also an inspiration to Vellu. Vellu is without a doubt the very clear & obvious main character of Tricking in Finland. He's also completely natural and raised along with the sport. He is one of the few to truly dedicate his entire life to Tricking and invested everything into the future. If you think "Finland", it's not possible than to think of anything other than "Vellu", because the two words have the same meaning in Tricking !

Iran 🇮🇷

Iran first became apparent to me when someone introduced themselves on the main Tricking forum on facebook somewhere in the mid 2010s and presented the idea of a Tricking Federation. Many, including myself actually met the idea with backlash and immense doubt. 10 years or so later, in 2025 I'm now understanding as to why this idea would be proposed and I'm mature enough to see the value in an International Federation. My way of apologizing is in admitting that they were technically, politically right. From the perspective of my younger self, I saw Tricking Iran as essentially strangers to the community, and didn't believe that what had been presented to us was a real representation of the sport, and so I saw it as wrong because it lacked the cultural nuance and individuals who were practising the sport, which was primarily done in the West is where the real sport was taking place. I also recognize that there are outer conflicts with other countries such as Iran, which can make cooperation difficult with language barriers and trust issues, etc. I would like to say though as a Canadian that I am used to diversity and don't actually care about the differences between us politically. Hopefully Iran can be integrated into the main sport & they deserve credit for being the first to propose international cooperation on an official capacity via Federation Tricking. 

Later I discovered Morteza, who resembled the image of a Tricker and has many of the qualities and characteristics I recognize in Tricking. I see that Tricking Iran is forming the sport and evolving away from Karate / TKD and picking up the sport as we know it, though it looks like it needs continued development, I think Iran has a bright future with Morteza as their guide !

I first noticed Japan start to make it's way to the world stage in the mid 2010s. I don't think they made their way out to events like Loopkicks until later, but Hooked I think is what attracted them to the world stage with Daisuke being the first to really represent internationally. I've learned more about the development of the country, and of course I started filming my battle channel when I didn't make the cut (lol) at their event in Kobe. The Japenese established themselves as probably the highest performing country in Tricking. They are pretty much right up there with USA, and I think USA and Japan is pretty much the biggest national competitors in the sport at this time ( in the mid 2020s ). Japan has a lot of cultural influence that has garnered many fans, because of franchises like Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Yu Gi Oh & many popular anime and videogames. Many Trickers are infact inspired by these and we base our culture from the inspiration we get from Japan. My channel is partly dedicated to saying thank you to Japan .. arigatou !

The Japanese Tricking Community started off developing a national event called XTC ( Xtreme Tricks Contest ) which developed from founders from the XKC era of Tricking. Eventually, the main prefectures involved with Tricking seemingly formed an association in the mid 2010s. Eventually launching a flagship enterprise called TBJxWOT ( Tricking Battle of Japan x World of Tricking ) this was intended to attract more National & International attention to Japan. After corona-virus and with the inclusion of smaller communities and non-Japanese entities being involved, it seems that the landscape of Japanese Tricking has changed by mid 2020s.

Russia 🇷🇺

I first noticed Russian athletes called "Dvinsk Clan" in old parkour/tricking/freerunning videos. Eventually, I met a tricker called "The Russian" at Loopkicks 2008, and I noticed athletes like Ilya and Slava coming up. Eventually, a tricker named Alex D was the sensation.. I think around 2010. 
If I had to search deep inside my soul .. and come to the conclusion .. who do I think is the golden child of Russia? 
I have to pick Ilya. 
Ilya & Alyona. 
I think they represent Royalty, just a bit more than anyone else, as well as the purity of the sport of Tricking.
