Yami-baito aka the Dark Part Time Job ...
There was recently a Canadian that was discovered to be a drug-mule .. except, that they didn't know they were one either
See the article on CTV News
.. but the same concept rings true globally as the newest threat emerges that affects naive individuals
Hi my name is David & I constantly learn more about the topic of sports corruption and the methods that are being used to influence athletes in that direction .. and I'm doin' my darndest to raise awareness of it !!
"Yamibaito (闇バイト), which translates to "dark part-time jobs," refers to deceptive recruitment schemes on social media and encrypted messaging apps in Japan that lure people into participating in criminal activities.
These job postings are designed to exploit people in financial distress by offering remarkably high pay for simple, "easy" tasks that require no experience.
How the Scams Work
- Recruitment: Gangs and organized crime syndicates (often referred to as tokuryū) post ads on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, and Line. They use vague phrases like "high-paying side job" or "just transport an item".
- The Trap: Once a person responds, communication is moved to encrypted, ephemeral messaging apps like Telegram or Signal.
- The Crimes: What starts as a seemingly harmless task often turns into assisting with serious offenses. Recruits are forced or tricked into becoming "couriers" for stolen goods, collecting fraudulent money, acting as bank mules for scams, or even committing violent robberies and home invasions.
- Coercion: If recruits realize the job is illegal and try to quit, the organizers threaten them, their families, or blackmail them with the personal information they provided during the application process. "
.. not strictly limited to being a "courier", the same concept applies to unknowingly being brought into any scheme, believing it to be legit, in which the leadership intended to trick recruits into doing something that they knew to not be lawful & later blackmailing them into silence or continued compliance
How might this apply to Tricking?
Tricking is in a mixed state of being around a 25-year-young grass roots sport, with the majority of athletes being in a young age-demographic, around the same age as the sport actually and it hasn't seemed likely that information related to proper business administration would be known, let alone communicated. Even someone like myself who has been studying the topic in greater detail lately am limited in understanding.
Generally speaking though, business owners tend to be start-ups with no to very little experience, while also tending to be working on the small scale - local community level. It's natural that a local contest is likely going to have conflicts of interest that can't be avoided - your friends and family are likely to be there to help fulfill the jobs and assist the business, but these entry level contests aren't really where sports corruption have the greatest weight - higher prize pools, and greater stakes contests are where the standards have to be raised in order to gain confidence in the outcome, but also to avoid legal liability of wrong-doing.
When businesses, teams or a specific level of competition is being advertised to the general public - there has to be justification and weight behind whats being presented. In order to establish these things, generally speaking the proper course of action is to include more people to be onboard with the administration, and for expectations to be known - all party members need to be on the same page. Local events have a natural high level of legitimacy if the local community shows up, but in order for a national competition to be sanctioned properly, the country needs to be involved as well.
Inclusivity, and durability of information, without any hidden elements are kind of the key factor.
How might individuals be influenced into groups to perform dark part time jobs in Tricking?
Precisely the opposite of establishing a clear model, with clear direction regarding appropriate activites - anonymity-based groups, whose structure is unclear, and where more is at play than meets the eye - where athletes are introduced to a "good thing" but might come to find that the advertisement had little weight behind it, and was misleading.
Being tasked to perform activities that might otherwise suspend or ban a person in a sports environment, if that environment is properly governed.
The higher the standards to clarity & communication, with right-mindedness in direction is a safe route for athletes.
We need to encourage that the next generation be mindful and recognize when being lead astray - and show that there are benefits and long term rewards for playing by the rules.
Quality of character is one such development !
